Jonathan Andic, the son of Isak Andic, the billionaire founder of the Spanish fashion brand Mango, has publicly denied the accusation that he killed his father. In an open letter to employees published on Tuesday, he described the allegation as "serious, unjust and unfounded." Andic, 45, announced that he will step down from his role as vice president of the company's board to concentrate on his legal defense.
First Public Comment on the Case
In his letter, Andic stated: "A public narrative has been created based on a view that is biased, distorted and taken out of context, which has created a perception of guilt that has nothing to do with reality." He added, "I make this decision sadly, but convinced that it is what's best for the company and for me... I need to concentrate all my energy on demonstrating my innocence." This marks his first public statement since the investigation was reopened.
Background of the Incident
The death occurred on December 14, 2024, while Isak Andic, then 71, was hiking with his son in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona. The Mango founder fell to his death, and authorities initially treated the incident as an accident. However, in October 2025, prosecutors reopened the investigation, focusing on Jonathan Andic. He was arrested a week ago and later released after posting bail of one million euros (approximately $1.2 million).
Evidence of a Strained Relationship
The presiding judge, in her bail decision, cited the allegedly "bad relationship" between father and son as part of the evidence. She noted that Jonathan Andic's "obsession... with money" was a driving factor. In his letter, Andic acknowledged that the "deeply painful" death of his father was compounded by having to face "the most serious, unjust and unfounded accusation a person can face." He expressed his love for his family, saying, "I have always deeply loved my family, and especially my father. We also had difficult and complicated moments, which we overcame with great effort, generosity and help."
Isak Andic's Legacy
Isak Andic was born in Istanbul and moved with his family to Barcelona from Turkiye as a teenager in the late 1960s. With the assistance of his older brother Nahman, he opened the first Mango shop in 1984. The company rapidly expanded to become one of the world's leading fashion groups.
