Elon Musk Backs Armie Hammer's Comeback Film Citizen Vigilante
Musk Backs Hammer's Citizen Vigilante on X

Elon Musk has thrown his support behind Armie Hammer's Hollywood comeback by sharing the actor's controversial new film Citizen Vigilante with his more than 240 million followers on X. The tech billionaire reposted the action thriller on the social media platform after director Uwe Boll made the film available to stream free for 48 hours following its controversial release.

Musk's Endorsement Expands Film's Reach

Musk's endorsement significantly expanded the film's reach and reignited debate surrounding both the movie and Hammer's return to acting. Citizen Vigilante stars Hammer as Sanders, a wealthy American businessman living in Croatia who takes justice into his own hands by targeting violent criminals, rapists and corrupt officials. The film has generated widespread controversy over its graphic violence and themes surrounding immigration, with German authorities refusing to grant it an age rating, effectively preventing its release in the country.

Sequel Already Planned

Musk also responded positively to news of a planned sequel, writing on X that "Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better," further signalling his support for the project. Director Uwe Boll has already confirmed that a follow-up is in development for a 2027 release.

Hammer's Return After Allegations

The film marks Hammer's first leading role since his career was derailed by allegations of sexual misconduct in 2021. Hammer has consistently denied the allegations, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney declined to file criminal charges in 2023 after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Speaking earlier this year about landing the role, Hammer admitted he became emotional after learning Boll wanted to cast him. "I'm pretty sure I cried," the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. "I was like: I'm going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything... I just wanted to work again."

Divided Critical Reception

Critical reaction to Citizen Vigilante has been sharply divided. Variety described the film as a "violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt" exploitation thriller, while audience response has been considerably warmer, helping fuel online discussion after Musk's endorsement. Whether Musk's backing translates into long-term success for Hammer's comeback remains to be seen, but the X owner's involvement has ensured Citizen Vigilante remains one of the most talked-about releases of the summer.
