In a striking political endorsement, Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper Nicki Minaj declared herself to be Donald Trump's "number one fan" during a public appearance in Washington DC on Thursday. The announcement came as she showcased her Trump "gold card" visa, a controversial program offering residency and a pathway to US citizenship for wealthy immigrants.
From Critic to Supporter: Minaj's Political Shift
Previously known for criticizing Trump's hardline immigration policies, Minaj has undergone a notable transformation in recent years, now praising his leadership. This shift is particularly significant given her personal history; she arrived in the US as a child with her parents and has spoken openly about her experiences.
On stage, Minaj was seen holding hands with Trump, emphasizing her unwavering support. "I will say that I am probably the president's number one fan, and that's not going to change," she stated. "And the hate or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more."
The Trump Gold Card Visa: A Fast-Track to Citizenship
Minaj displayed her new visa card, emblazoned with Trump's face, in a social media thread with the caption "Welp." She later added, "Finalising that citizenship paperwork as we speak as per my wonderful, gracious, charming president," noting it came free of charge for her.
Launched in December, the gold card program requires a $1 million investment plus a $15,000 processing fee, granting US residency to affluent applicants like Minaj. However, it has faced criticism for emerging amid Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration, creating a stark contrast in policy approaches.
Minaj's Personal Immigration Journey
In a 2018 Facebook post, Minaj revealed she "came to this country as an illegal immigrant at five years old," while condemning family-separation policies. "I can't imagine the horror of being in a strange place and having my parents stripped away from me at the age of five," she wrote, highlighting the emotional toll on children.
During a 2024 TikTok stream, she expressed frustration over her non-citizen status despite years in the US and substantial tax payments. "I'm not a citizen of America. Isn't that crazy? I was born on a beautiful island called Trinidad and Tobago. But I've been in the States for many years," she said, questioning why she hadn't received honorary citizenship.
Unlimited Residency Without Full Citizenship
While the gold card grants Minaj unlimited right of residence in the US, it does not confer full citizenship under the agreement. This distinction underscores the complexities of immigration pathways, even for high-profile individuals.
At the Washington event, Trump humorously remarked he would grow out his nails to emulate the rapper, further cementing their public camaraderie. Minaj vowed to defend Trump against opponents, stating, "He has a lot of force behind him, and God is protecting him."
This endorsement occurs against a backdrop of protests following fatal shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, adding layers to the ongoing national debate over immigration reform and celebrity influence in politics.
