Olivia Wilde has reflected on one of the most public and painful moments of her split from Jason Sudeikis, describing the experience of being served legal papers on stage at CinemaCon in 2022 as “incredibly traumatising”. During an appearance on the 17 June 2026 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, the actress and director spoke about the incident that occurred while she was presenting her film Don't Worry Darling at the annual cinema convention in Las Vegas.
“I will never forget” the moment, Wilde said, recalling how she was unexpectedly handed an envelope containing custody-related legal documents in front of a room filled with studio executives, exhibitors and members of the press. She described the experience as one of the most difficult situations she has faced publicly. Wilde explained that being on stage already left her feeling vulnerable, making the interruption even more distressing. Despite the shock, she completed her presentation before breaking down backstage and later seeking therapy to help process the ordeal.
The incident quickly became a major news story despite CinemaCon's no-recording policy. Wilde revealed that she had initially hoped the moment would remain private, but was stunned when it spread across the internet almost immediately. She later recalled an awkward encounter with actor Tom Cruise, who referenced the incident after it became public.
At the time, many assumed the envelope contained a script or promotional material. It was later confirmed that the documents related to custody proceedings involving Wilde and her former fiancé, Jason Sudeikis, with whom she shares two children, son Otis and daughter Daisy. Although the incident became closely associated with Sudeikis, Wilde said on the podcast that she does not believe he intentionally arranged for the papers to be served in such a public manner. According to Wilde, Sudeikis later expressed regret over what happened and maintained that he was unaware of the timing and location chosen by the process server.
Looking back, Wilde said the experience ultimately made her more resilient. While she still considers the episode deeply upsetting, she noted that surviving such a public ordeal has given her confidence that she can handle future challenges. Wilde and Sudeikis ended their relationship in 2020 after nearly a decade together. Despite a highly publicised custody dispute, the pair have since reached an agreement and now maintain a strong co-parenting relationship focused on their two children.
