Brad Bird Rules Out Ratatouille 2 Sequel Despite Patton Oswalt's Interest
Brad Bird Says No to Ratatouille 2 Sequel

Director Brad Bird has definitively ruled out the possibility of making a sequel to the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille, asserting that the original movie told a complete story. His remarks come even as the film's star, Patton Oswalt, has expressed openness to returning for a follow-up if the right creative concept emerges.

Bird's Firm Stance on Sequels

In an interview with Collider, Bird revealed that he has consistently rejected proposals for a Ratatouille sequel over the years. "They've made little feints towards that to see how I would react," Bird explained, referring to discussions initiated by Pixar. "I'm like, 'No, we told that story.'" He drew a parallel to his other acclaimed animated film, The Iron Giant, which also gained a devoted following but, in his view, reached a natural conclusion. Bird emphasized that he prefers to revisit a project only when there is a compelling creative reason, contrasting this with The Incredibles franchise, where he felt a sequel was warranted and is now developing Incredibles 3.

Oswalt's Conditional Interest

Patton Oswalt, who voiced the protagonist Remy in Ratatouille, shared a different perspective during an appearance on the Obsessed podcast. He stated he would "love" to return for a sequel but stressed that it should only happen if Bird develops a story he genuinely wants to tell. Oswalt pointed to The Incredibles franchise as an example, noting that Bird only proceeded with a sequel after finding the right creative direction. "I would rather wait for an organic idea than see a follow-up developed simply because the original film was successful," Oswalt said.

No Official Plans from Pixar

As of now, Pixar has not announced any plans for Ratatouille 2. Bird's comments provide the clearest indication yet that a sequel is unlikely unless a new story idea changes his mind. The Wrap first reported Bird's latest remarks, while Oswalt shared his views on the Obsessed podcast. The original Ratatouille won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2008 and remains one of Pixar's most beloved films.
