In response to new measures by the Punjab government mandating early closure of shopping malls and cinemas, actor Fahad Mustafa has penned an open letter to the administration, seeking a relaxation of restrictions on theatres to allow audiences more time to watch films. The actor addressed Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, requesting that moviegoers who are occupied during the day be granted access to evening screenings.
Actor's Plea for Extended Hours
“I would like to humbly request your consideration regarding the current closing time of malls and cinemas,” wrote Mustafa. He highlighted that many cinemas in the province are situated within malls, which are now required to close at 8:00pm under austerity measures prompted by the global fuel crisis resulting from the ongoing Middle East conflict. This has shortened show schedules significantly.
“The early closure is affecting recently released films that are relying on this period to reach audiences,” the actor noted. He requested an extension in timings, arguing that it would boost ticket sales, support employment in the exhibition and hospitality sectors, and provide greater access and convenience for audiences.
Support for Film Industry
While Mustafa acknowledged the Punjab government’s support for the film industry through initiatives like Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s Film City plan for Lahore, he urged the administration to also back the creative sector by granting a small relaxation in cinema timings. “A small relaxation in opening hours would be deeply appreciated by filmmakers, exhibitors, and cinemagoers alike,” he concluded.
Mustafa is currently promoting his film Zombeid, co-starring Mehwish Hayat. The first-ever Pakistani zombie thriller premiered this Eidul Azha and is now showing in theaters nationwide. The film was released alongside two other movies this Eid, competing for limited screen space due to the timing restrictions, which were temporarily relaxed during the holidays.
