Patton Oswalt on Ratatouille Sequel

Patton Oswalt has expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Remy in a potential Ratatouille sequel, but only under specific conditions. The actor and comedian shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on the Obsessed podcast, emphasizing that any follow-up must be driven by a compelling story rather than a desire to expand the franchise.

Conditions for a Sequel

Oswalt stated that he would welcome another chapter in Remy's story if it offers a meaningful expansion of the original film. "Obviously, I'd love if there was a Ratatouille sequel," he said. However, he argued that successful follow-ups introduce new dimensions rather than simply revisiting familiar ground. "I want the sequel to be not the same type of movie, but that same energy that Terminator 2 or Aliens had," Oswalt added, noting that it should not feel like "just a money grab."

Involvement of Brad Bird

Oswalt also stressed that any sequel idea should originate from Ratatouille director Brad Bird rather than being developed solely to continue the franchise. "I don't wanna be the guy going, 'Hey, what if Remy did this?'" he said. "I want it to be one of those ideas that happens that you cannot get away from." Referencing Bird's approach, Oswalt noted that The Incredibles did not receive a sequel until the director believed there was another story worth exploring. "So if he gets an idea, that's the one I wanna do," Oswalt concluded.

Current Status

While Pixar is preparing to release Toy Story 5 and has Incredibles 3, Monsters, Inc. 3, and Coco 2 in development, the studio has not announced a sequel to Ratatouille. The 2007 film earned critical acclaim, grossed $623 million worldwide, and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. For now, Ratatouille remains one of Pixar's standalone successes with no sequel officially announced.
