False Viral Video Circulates Amid US-Iran Ceasefire Announcement
A misleading video has been circulating widely on social media platform X, falsely claiming to show United States troop deployments in the Middle East during current regional tensions. The clip, which gained millions of views, actually depicts a military homecoming ceremony from June 2023 in California, not current deployment activities.
Pakistan's Diplomatic Breakthrough
This misinformation spread as Pakistan achieved a significant diplomatic victory. Through intensive backchannel efforts, Pakistan successfully mediated a two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran on Wednesday. This breakthrough followed weeks of escalating hostilities that began with US-Israeli strikes on February 28, which had rapidly expanded into broader regional conflict.
Pakistan emerged as a central diplomatic actor in facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran at a critical juncture. The country will now host follow-up talks between the two nations on Friday, with delegations from both Iran and the United States arriving in Islamabad for negotiations.
The Viral Misinformation
The false claim originated when multiple X users shared a video of military aircraft with captions suggesting massive US troop movements to the Middle East. One post claiming "Breaking: According to Reuters, the US has more than 50,000 troops deployed in the Middle East" gained 491,000 views, while another similar post accumulated 2.2 million views.
A pro-Iranian account added dramatic commentary, stating: "Anyone who believes that President Trump sent this entire fleet just to accept a ceasefire with Iran is completely deluded. A large-scale ground intervention is inevitably coming." This post received 289,000 views, and numerous other shares collectively garnered over 360,000 additional views.
Fact-Checking Methodology
Investigators initiated a thorough fact-check due to the claim's high virality and public interest in the US-Iran ceasefire. A reverse image search revealed the video's true origin: an official US Defence Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) blog post dated June 6, 2023, titled "B-Roll: VMM-362 (Reinforced) Deployment Homecoming."
The official description confirms the footage shows US Marine Corps aircraft with the Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 362 conducting a flyover at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California. Further verification through YouTube found identical footage uploaded on June 15, 2023, with matching visuals.
Researchers also conducted keyword searches to verify whether Reuters or other credible international news outlets had reported such deployment claims. No corroborating reports were found. Instead, a Reuters article from March 30, 2026, discussed previous troop movements before the current ceasefire agreement.
Conclusion: Claim is False
The viral claim that the video shows current US troop deployments in the Middle East is completely false. The footage originates from a June 2023 homecoming ceremony in California and has been misrepresented to suggest current military activities. This fact check was originally published by iVerify Pakistan, a project of CEJ-IBA and UNDP, confirming the misinformation circulating alongside genuine diplomatic developments.
