The PTI-led opposition in Punjab has formally called for an emergency session of the provincial assembly to address a series of pressing issues, including the deteriorating security situation, rising violence against women, prison conditions, and the health and treatment of PTI founder Imran Khan. The requisition was jointly submitted by Opposition Leader Moinuddin Riaz Qureshi along with lawmakers Sheikh Imtiaz, Rana Shehbaz, and Farrukh Javed Moon.
Security Concerns and Crimes Against Women
The opposition maintained that the increase in crimes against women, such as rape, harassment, abduction, and murder, along with rising robbery and street crime, has created widespread fear among the public. It alleged that the provincial government has failed to ensure the safety and security of citizens and their property. The requisition specifically highlighted a recent incident involving a foreign woman, stating that it has damaged not only Punjab’s image but also Pakistan’s international reputation.
Prison Reforms and Treatment of Political Workers
Commenting on prison conditions, Qureshi said Punjab’s jails require immediate attention, alleging that inmates are being denied basic facilities, adequate healthcare, and conditions consistent with human dignity. He further expressed concern over allegations of mistreatment of political workers, particularly women activists, in prisons, including claims of inadequate medical care and violations of fundamental rights.
Imran Khan’s Health and Medical Care
The opposition leader described the health and treatment of PTI founder Imran Khan as a matter of significant public importance. He called for authorities to ensure that Khan is provided facilities and medical treatment in accordance with the law, prison rules, court orders, and fundamental human rights. Qureshi also raised concerns over access to family members and personal physicians.
Demand for Investigation into Deaths of PTI Workers
In addition, the opposition demanded an independent and transparent investigation into allegations surrounding the deaths of PTI workers following their release from jail, as well as claims of torture, physical and psychological abuse, and mistreatment during detention.
Constitutional Oversight and Accountability
The opposition argued that an immediate session of the Punjab Assembly is essential to enable the House to perform its constitutional oversight role, hold the provincial government accountable, determine responsibility for the issues raised, and formulate urgent corrective measures.
