Dar Accuses India of Water Politics Over Indus Treaty

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has accused India of engaging in “water politics” by allegedly violating the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty. In a statement issued from Islamabad, Dar said India had unlawfully suspended the treaty and was attempting to use water resources as a tool of pressure, a move he described as contrary to established international commitments.

Mechanism for Dispute Resolution

He stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty contains a clear mechanism for the peaceful settlement of disputes and noted that compliance with the agreement remains an obligation under international law. The deputy prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and its support for a rules-based international order.

Call for Adherence to International Law

Dar further emphasized that international legal frameworks governing water issues must be respected by all parties, warning that any departure from the principles of peaceful coexistence and cooperation could lead to serious repercussions. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s position that disputes should be addressed through dialogue, legal mechanisms, and adherence to international agreements.
