Police in Lahore have apprehended another escapee connected to the recent prison van breakout, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Ali Raza, was arrested during a targeted raid in the outskirts of the city. Authorities recovered a pistol, ammunition, and a sum of cash from his possession.
Details of the Arrest
The arrest was made by a joint team of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and local police following a tip-off. According to CTD spokesperson Malik Naveed, the raid was conducted in the early hours of the morning in the Kahna area. “The suspect tried to flee but was overpowered by our team. He was found in possession of illegal arms and stolen money,” Naveed said.
Background of the Escape
Ali Raza was among several prisoners who escaped from a prison van on Monday while being transported to a court hearing. The incident occurred near the Ferozepur Road when the van was ambushed by armed accomplices. Two guards were injured in the attack. So far, police have recaptured five of the eight escapees. The remaining three are still at large, and a manhunt is underway.
Recoveries and Legal Action
During the raid, police seized a 9mm pistol, 15 rounds of ammunition, and Rs. 250,000 in cash. The suspect has been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. A case has been registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and further investigations are ongoing to determine his links with criminal networks.
Police Operation Intensifies
Inspector General of Police Punjab, Dr. Usman Anwar, has directed all district police to intensify efforts to nab the remaining fugitives. Checkpoints have been set up across the province, and intelligence-led operations are being conducted. “We will not rest until all escapees are brought back to justice,” Anwar said in a statement.
The prison van escape has raised serious questions about security protocols. Authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident, and three police officials have been suspended for negligence.
