Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels have issued a direct threat to Saudi Arabia, warning that any violation of Yemeni airspace or attack on the country will be met with a comprehensive response targeting Saudi airports and vital interests on land and sea. The warning came in a video statement by military spokesman Yahya Saree, who accused the kingdom of a previous airspace intrusion.
Houthi Spokesman Issues Warning
“We warn the criminal Saudi enemy against repeating any attempt to violate our airspace or any aggression targeting our country. Such actions will be met with a comprehensive response targeting its airports and vital interests on land and sea,” Saree said in the statement, according to reports.
Context of the Threat
The threat follows a period of heightened tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, which leads a military coalition supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government. The Houthis have previously launched drone and missile attacks on Saudi oil facilities and airports, though such attacks have decreased amid UN-led peace efforts.
Regional and International Implications
The warning underscores the fragility of the ceasefire in Yemen and the potential for escalation. Saudi Arabia has not officially responded to the Houthi statement. The conflict, now in its ninth year, has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
