An Israeli border police officer has been caught on camera throwing a stun grenade into a car carrying Palestinians and then holding the door shut as the device exploded inside. The incident occurred at the Qalandiya refugee camp in East Jerusalem, as reported by Haaretz.
Footage Captures the Attack
The shocking footage shows the moment the officer approached the vehicle and threw the stun grenade inside. The officer can be heard telling the occupants, “Shut your mouth, who are you talking to like that?” before deploying the device. A passenger fled from another door, but the driver was trapped inside as the grenade detonated.
Disciplinary Action Initiated
The Israeli Justice Ministry’s department for the investigation of police officers is handling the case. The officer’s actions were deemed “not in accordance with procedure,” leading to disciplinary proceedings. Stun grenades are typically used for dispersing protesters during demonstrations.
Political Condemnation
Labour party member MK Naama Lazimi condemned the attack, calling it a “painful reminder of what has been happening in the West Bank for years, and which has intensified under the outgoing government. Unrestrained violence and the erosion of moral boundaries.” She added, “This is what a state looks like when its norms have been shattered. When there are no limits and everything is permitted, the violence will only grow and spread.”
