Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer held talks at 10 Downing Street in London on Thursday, focusing on developments in the Middle East and reaffirming the historical ties between their nations. The meeting centered on supporting negotiations and diplomatic efforts to ensure safe and secure maritime navigation through the Gulf's strategic waterways, according to Oman News Agency.
Focus on Maritime Security and Regional Stability
The two leaders discussed outstanding regional issues, most notably the Iranian nuclear file. They agreed that a lasting agreement should uphold regional stability and promote peaceful coexistence among neighboring countries. The talks come amid heightened tensions following the US-Iran conflict that began on February 28 and escalated for over 100 days across the region.
Context of US-Iran Tensions
Last month, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to end clashes and start negotiation rounds on critical issues, including Iran's nuclear program and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Oman, which was one of 10 Middle Eastern countries targeted by Iran during the US-Israel war with Tehran, previously hosted talks between Iranian and US officials just days before the outbreak of war.
Delegations and Attendance
The Omani delegation included Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi and Ambassador to the UK Badr bin Mohammed Al-Manthri. The British side was represented by National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell and Ambassador to Oman Liane Saunders.
