PM Shehbaz Reaffirms Pakistan's UN Commitment in Meeting

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations during a meeting with María Fernanda Espinosa, a candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, at the Prime Minister’s House.

Pakistan’s High Regard for the UN

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister welcomed Ms. Espinosa and underscored the high importance Pakistan has always attached to the United Nations and its central role in promoting international peace, security and sustainable development.

Expectations for Next UN Leadership

Reaffirming Pakistan’s enduring commitment to the UN, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed the hope that the next leadership of the United Nations would continue to advance the organization’s three core pillars—peace and security, development, and human rights—in a balanced manner. He stressed the importance of adherence to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, faithful implementation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, respect for international law and treaties, and enhanced cooperation among member states within the UN framework to promote global peace and prosperity.

Espinosa’s Appreciation for Pakistan

María Fernanda Espinosa thanked the Prime Minister for receiving her and appreciated Pakistan’s leading role in recent regional peace efforts as well as its active and constructive engagement in the United Nations over the past several decades. She also recalled her previous visit to Pakistan in 2019, when she served as President of the United Nations General Assembly, and acknowledged Pakistan’s continued contribution to multilateral diplomacy and the work of the United Nations.
