Syria's Interior Ministry announced on Friday that it had responded, in coordination with the National Commission for Missing Persons (NCMP), to a report of a mass grave discovered in the town of Sednaya. The grave contains the remains of opposition fighters killed during the western Qalamoun battles in 2014 against militias of the deposed regime.
Security Measures at the Site
Internal security forces established a security cordon around the site to protect the location, preserve evidence, and ensure the area remains undisturbed until legal procedures are completed, the ministry told SANA.
Investigation and Documentation
Specialized teams are taking required measures to document information and collect evidence in preparation for further search and investigation work. The ministry stated that it is committed to preserving the dignity of the victims and pursuing the case to achieve justice and uncover the truth.
The ministry extended its condolences to the families of the martyrs, stating that determining the fate of victims, protecting their rights, and holding those responsible for these crimes accountable remain a national and moral duty.
NCMP Initial Assessment
Earlier Friday, the NCMP said it had conducted an initial field assessment in Sednaya town in response to reports from residents about suspected burial sites or mass graves. The assessment aimed to determine the technical, logistical, and legal requirements for handling them according to professional standards.
Recent Discoveries of Mass Graves
In recent months, authorities have discovered mass graves in several areas of Syria containing the remains of hundreds of people who were killed as a result of the criminal practices of the deposed regime and its allies during the years of the revolution.
