The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) signaled on Wednesday that his inspectors would visit Iranian nuclear enrichment sites, a critical component of the interim deal between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the war.
Grossi's Statement in Tokyo
IAEA Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi made the comments in Tokyo, stating that the inspections would occur soon. "Whether this happens the day after tomorrow or in one week or in 10 days, it's important, but not essential," Grossi told journalists. "This is going to happen."
Dispute Over Bombed Enrichment Sites
On Tuesday, Iran and the US disputed whether bombed enrichment sites would be subject to inspection. This issue is key for the deal, which requires Iran's stockpile of uranium to be "downblended" from highly enriched levels. The inspections are essential to verify compliance.
Impact on the Interim Deal
The confirmation from Grossi removes a major hurdle in the implementation of the interim agreement. The deal, which aims to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, depends on international verification of uranium stockpile reductions. The IAEA's role is central to building trust between the parties.
