Lawmakers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) in the Sindh Assembly on Monday launched a blistering attack on the provincial government over the worsening water crisis and prolonged, unannounced power outages in Karachi during Muharram. In a joint statement issued from the party's Bahadurabad headquarters, the MQM-P MPAs termed the situation a grave injustice to citizens and mourners, accusing the administration of gross negligence.
Deprivation of Basic Utilities During Holy Month
The lawmakers said the deprivation of basic utilities during the holy month reflected administrative failure, particularly at a time when large religious gatherings and processions were underway across the metropolis. They highlighted that prolonged load-shedding—ranging from 14 to 18 hours—amid intense heat and humidity had made life miserable for participants of majalis and mourning processions. According to the MQM-P representatives, the dual crisis of water and electricity has severely impacted both daily life and religious observances.
Alleged Nexus Between KWSB and K-Electric
The MQM-P MPAs alleged that a nexus between the Karachi Water and Sanitation Corporation (KWSB) and K-Electric had paralysed large parts of the city. Areas such as Surjani, Orangi, Liaquatabad, Malir, Landhi, and Clifton were identified as the worst affected, with residents struggling for both water and electricity. The lawmakers claimed that this collusion has exacerbated the suffering of citizens, who are already enduring harsh weather conditions during Muharram.
Poor Civic Conditions Along Procession Routes
The lawmakers further criticised the poor civic conditions along procession routes, pointing to overflowing sewage and the absence of street lighting near imambargahs. They described these conditions as direct evidence of the Sindh government's negligence and lack of preparedness for the religious events. The MQM-P representatives demanded immediate action to restore water and power supplies and to improve sanitation and lighting in areas hosting processions.
Impact on Mourners and Citizens
The prolonged outages and water shortages have not only disrupted religious activities but also posed serious health risks due to the heat and unhygienic conditions. The MQM-P lawmakers called on the provincial government to take responsibility and ensure that basic utilities are provided without interruption, especially during significant religious occasions. They warned that continued neglect would lead to further public discontent and potential unrest in the city.
