PM Shehbaz Sharif Directs Tariff Policy Implementation

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed relevant authorities to ensure the effective implementation of the National Tariff Policy (2025-30) and modernise tariff-related institutions to support investment, trade and industrial growth. Chairing a high-level meeting to review economic performance and the rollout of the tariff policy, the prime minister said export-led growth remained the government's top economic priority.

Emphasis on Transparency and Efficiency

He stressed that a transparent and efficient National Tariff Commission was essential for strengthening industry and attracting investment. Shehbaz Sharif instructed the commission to play a more active role in facilitating businesses and investors, while undertaking institutional reforms in line with international standards. He also called for the adoption of modern technologies, including information technology and artificial intelligence, to improve efficiency and transparency.

Key Measures Announced

Officials briefed the meeting on the implementation framework of the National Tariff Policy, highlighting plans for the gradual reduction of tariffs across various sectors to enhance Pakistan’s competitiveness and support export-oriented growth. The meeting was informed that duties on reefer containers and semi-trailers would be abolished to strengthen the logistics sector and improve supply chains. Customs duties on specialised vehicles and machinery are also being reduced to encourage activity in the construction industry.

In a significant measure for the pharmaceutical sector, customs duties on key raw materials, particularly those used in the production of cancer medicines, will be removed to support local manufacturing and improve access to essential treatments.

Commitment to Sustainable Growth

The prime minister said tariff reforms and institutional modernisation would contribute to higher exports, increased investment and sustainable long-term economic growth. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant Haroon Akhtar and senior government officials.
