The Punjab government has launched a province-wide crackdown against illegal factories operating in residential areas, following the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. As part of this campaign, the Environmental Protection Department's Chiniot team conducted a major operation against a leather processing unit accused of causing environmental pollution.
Demolition of Illegal Tannery
Authorities demolished an illegal tannery and a warehouse used for storing animal hides within a residential locality. Officials stated that the facility was involved in hide processing and leather manufacturing activities, which generated foul odors and unhealthy environmental conditions, creating difficulties for nearby residents.
Residents Welcome Action
The action was taken following complaints from local residents, who welcomed the operation and expressed appreciation for the government's intervention. Residents reported that children, women, and elderly people had been facing health concerns and discomfort due to pollution and unhygienic conditions in the area.
Government's Stance
Commenting on the campaign, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz asserted that no leniency would be shown to individuals violating environmental and zoning regulations. Senior Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb reiterated that industrial activities are not permitted in residential neighborhoods and warned of strict action against environmental offenders, including illegal tanneries, slaughterhouses, plastic-burning units, waste-burning operations, and those involved in crop residue burning.
Continued Crackdown
Marriyum Aurangzeb urged citizens to comply with environmental laws and emphasized that the crackdown on polluters would continue across the province. She also stated that Punjab's air quality had improved significantly over the past two years due to measures implemented by the provincial government.
