Mohmand District Introduces Digital Price Screens in Markets to Combat Overcharging
In a pioneering move for the merged tribal districts, the Mohmand district administration has launched an innovative initiative to prevent overcharging during Ramadan. The administration has installed digital screens in local markets, displaying official prices of essential commodities to ensure transparency in market transactions.
Implementation and Key Features
Officials confirmed that the digital screens have been strategically placed in major bazaars across the district. These screens showcase government-notified price lists for daily food items, providing citizens with real-time access to accurate pricing information. Additionally, contact numbers of relevant officials are prominently displayed on the screens, enabling residents to report instances of overpricing or other violations directly.
The project was implemented under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yasir Hassan, who emphasized its importance in curbing profiteering. "This initiative aims to ensure transparent pricing and provide the public with timely information on essential commodities," Mr. Hassan stated. He further explained that the effort was launched on the directives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, the chief secretary, and the commissioner of the Peshawar division.
Monitoring and Enforcement Measures
To bolster the effectiveness of the digital screens, the district administration has established three monitoring desks across Mohmand to receive and address public complaints. Special committees have also been formed to oversee the implementation of the official price list. These committees conduct daily visits to markets, actively monitoring prices and enforcing compliance with government-approved rates.
Deputy Commissioner Hassan issued a stern warning to traders, stating that strict action will be taken against those found violating the established pricing guidelines. The comprehensive approach includes:
- Digital displays for real-time price transparency.
- Dedicated helplines for citizen reporting.
- Regular market inspections by special committees.
- Proactive enforcement against profiteering activities.
This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing market regulation in the region, leveraging technology to protect consumers during the critical Ramadan period. By combining digital tools with on-ground monitoring, the Mohmand district administration aims to foster a fair and accountable marketplace for all residents.
