ECP Launches Delimitation Correction Process for Tribal District Councils

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially commenced a critical exercise to correct the delimitation of neighbourhood and village councils in the tribal districts, with Mohmand being a key focus area. This initiative aims to refine electoral boundaries to enhance fairness and transparency in upcoming local government elections.

Formal Notification and Committee Formation

According to officials, a formal notification has been issued by the ECP from its headquarters in Islamabad, marking the start of this delimitation correction process. To oversee the task, a three-member committee has been constituted under the supervision of District Election Commissioner Mohmand, Shahid Ali Khan. This committee has been actively engaged in preliminary work over the past month, laying the groundwork for public involvement.

Public Engagement and Objection Submission

In a move to ensure community participation, the committee has issued Form-I, inviting residents to submit objections and suggestions regarding the proposed delimitations. Residents can obtain the objection application form from the ECP office in Mohmand and must submit their concerns directly to the District Election Commissioner. The final decision on all objections will be made by the Regional Election Commissioner in Peshawar, ensuring a centralized and impartial review process.

Legal Framework and Voter Criteria

Under the existing legal provisions, a neighbourhood or village council constituency is required to consist of between 5,000 and 15,000 voters. Officials have emphasized the importance of this correction process, urging residents to cooperate fully to help establish clear and equitable boundaries. This cooperation is seen as vital for conducting elections that are both transparent and fair, thereby strengthening democratic practices in the region.

Documentation Requirements for Objections

Applicants wishing to submit objections must adhere to specific documentation requirements. These include:

  • A verified copy of their national identity card
  • A copy of the voter certificate
  • A proposed map of the relevant village or neighbourhood council
  • A power of attorney if represented by a lawyer

All applications, along with supporting documents, must be submitted in three separate sets, each placed in individual file covers, to ensure proper processing and review.
