Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Minister for Local Government, Mina Khan Afridi, presided over a comprehensive performance evaluation meeting of the Water and Sanitation Services Company Peshawar (WSSP) to assess the organization's operational efficiency and financial health.
Key Infrastructure and Service Delivery Metrics
During the detailed briefing, senior WSSP officials revealed the company's extensive service network across the provincial capital. WSSP operates 544 tube wells that provide clean drinking water to residents, supported by an extensive 1,400-kilometer water supply network spanning Peshawar.
The sanitation operations were equally impressive, with the company collecting approximately 500 tons of solid waste daily from 1,570 designated collection points. Additionally, WSSP manages the cleaning of 1,860 kilometers of drains across 42 union councils in Peshawar, ensuring proper wastewater management throughout the city.
Financial Performance and Operational Challenges
The meeting highlighted both achievements and challenges in WSSP's financial operations. The organization has successfully increased its monthly revenue from Rs19 million to Rs28 million following the implementation of revised service tariffs.
However, significant operational costs remain, with the monthly electricity bill for operating tube wells reaching Rs130 million. A proposal for final approval of a waste-selling mechanism is currently pending with the Planning and Development Department, which could provide additional revenue streams.
To serve Peshawar's population of two million people, WSSP currently operates 484 fleet vehicles and has established 20 new model streets in various city areas, demonstrating ongoing improvements to urban infrastructure.
Minister's Directives for Immediate Action
Minister Mina Khan Afridi issued several crucial directives during the meeting. He emphasized the need to expedite the transfer of 69 additional tube wells to WSSP's management and called for comprehensive measures to be implemented within one month to further boost the company's revenue generation capacity.
In a significant move for urban cleanliness, the minister mandated that all major roads in Peshawar must be kept clean at all costs starting immediately. He stressed the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment for citizens' wellbeing.
Demonstrating his personal commitment to the cause, Mina Khan Afridi announced he would personally monitor sanitation activities daily from a citizen's perspective to ensure visible improvements are achieved on the ground, promising hands-on oversight of the city's cleanliness drive.
The high-level meeting was attended by Secretary Local Government Aslam Saqib, Chief Executive Officer WSSP Yasir, and other senior officials who provided comprehensive insights into the company's operations and future plans.
