RAWALPINDI: Fresh local government delimitations have been finalized in Murree under the Punjab Local Government Act, granting the hill station the status of an autonomous Municipal Corporation and dividing the district into four local government entities comprising a total of 47 Union Councils (UCs).
Restructuring for Balanced Representation
The restructuring aims to ensure balanced urban-rural representation and the equitable distribution of municipal resources across the district. The corporation has been divided into 17 UCs and covers a population of 132,005.
Details of the Delimitation
The new setup includes the Murree Municipal Corporation, which itself comprises 17 Union Councils. The remaining 30 UCs are distributed among the other three local government entities within the district. This move is expected to bring governance closer to the people and improve service delivery.
Officials stated that the delimitation process was carried out transparently, considering population density and geographic factors. The autonomous status will allow Murree to manage its own affairs more efficiently, particularly in areas like tourism, infrastructure, and waste management.
The Punjab Local Government Act provides the legal framework for such reorganizations, aiming to strengthen local governance. With this change, Murree joins other major cities in Punjab that have been granted Municipal Corporation status.
