Pakistan on Sunday observed the 27th martyrdom anniversary of Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, with the nation paying glowing tribute to his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and supreme sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
Life and Sacrifice of Captain Karnal Sher Khan
Born in 1970 in the Swabi district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Captain Karnal Sher Khan embraced martyrdom on July 5, 1999, while leading from the front against overwhelming odds. In recognition of his exceptional gallantry, he was posthumously awarded Pakistan’s highest military honour, the Nishan-e-Haider.
President and Prime Minister Lead Tributes
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led the nation in honouring the fallen hero, describing his sacrifice as a timeless symbol of courage, patriotism, and devotion to the motherland. In his message, President Zardari said Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s sacrifice remains a glorious chapter in Pakistan’s history and will continue to inspire future generations. He also described the country’s martyrs as a priceless national asset whose sacrifices would always be remembered with honour and gratitude.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s unmatched bravery and supreme sacrifice during the Kargil conflict reflected the highest traditions of military professionalism, loyalty, and valour. He said the defence of the homeland is a sacred responsibility and the nation’s peace and sovereignty are safeguarded by the sacrifices of its martyrs. The prime minister reaffirmed that the government and people of Pakistan stand shoulder to shoulder with the armed forces against all external and internal threats, adding that the country’s freedom and sovereignty are secured through the sacred blood of its martyrs.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the Armed Forces of Pakistan and the services chiefs paid profound tribute to Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s unmatched courage, unwavering devotion, and supreme sacrifice. It described his legacy as a lasting beacon of patriotism and commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The military’s media wing said the people and armed forces remain committed to upholding the ideals for which Captain Karnal Sher Khan laid down his life, ensuring that his legacy endures for generations to come.
Religious Scholars Join Tributes
Religious scholars also paid tribute to the Nishan-e-Haider recipient, describing him as a symbol of courage, selflessness, and patriotism. They said the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs are a source of national pride and a lasting guarantee of the country’s security, sovereignty, and honour.
