Bilawal Picks Amjad Hussain as Gilgit-Baltistan CM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has nominated PPP provincial president Advocate Amjad Hussain as the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, according to a post shared by the party on X. The PPP stated that Bilawal held a telephonic conversation with PPP G-B president during which the decision was conveyed. According to the post, the PPP chairman also issued instructions regarding government formation and the implementation of citizens' constitutional and economic rights.

Coalition Agreement with PML-N

The PPP announced on Saturday that it and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had come to an agreement on forming the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan together. The party said it would get the seat of chief minister while the governor, opposition leader, and deputy speaker of the G-B Assembly would go to the PML-N. This coalition arrangement reflects the post-election political coordination between the two major parties at the national level.

Electoral Landscape in Gilgit-Baltistan

The PPP has secured the majority of seats to emerge as the largest party in the 24-member assembly, followed by the PML-N with six seats. The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party has emerged as the third-largest parliamentary group after four independent candidates elected on different constituencies joined its ranks. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had congratulated the PPP on its position as the leading party in G-B and indicated that the PML-N would sit in the opposition, while supporting the PPP in forming the government.
