Zelensky Proposes Replacing Ukraine's Prime Minister

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that he has proposed replacing Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, thanking her for her service and offering her a new role in relations with a key partner. The announcement, made via social media platform X, signals a significant government reshuffle aimed at implementing an updated political strategy.

Zelensky's Statement and Gratitude

“I am grateful to Yuliia for her clear, steady, and effective work as Prime Minister, for her years of productive service on Ukraine’s team, and I have offered her the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner,” Zelensky said on X. He added, “I expect that, together with MPs, we will make the corresponding changes in the Government of Ukraine.”

Reason for Government Changes

Zelensky stated that the government changes were necessary to “ensure the implementation of an updated political strategy,” though he did not provide further details. Svyrydenko was appointed as prime minister in July 2025, serving for just over a year. The president did not specify her new position or name her successor, but indicated that changes would also occur among the heads of law enforcement agencies.

Speculation on New Role and Successors

Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zhelezniak suggested that Svyrydenko is likely to become ambassador to the United States. “That means she will leave the post of prime minister and the entire government will be reshuffled,” Zhelezniak wrote on Telegram. Under Ukrainian law, the prime minister’s resignation requires parliamentary approval and triggers the resignation of the entire cabinet. Lawmakers have floated several possible successors, including Svyrydenko’s predecessor, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal; Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov; and Serhiy Koretskyi, head of the state energy company Naftogaz.
