DUSHANBE: Tajikistan announced on Wednesday that it will release more than 11,300 prisoners to commemorate the upcoming 35th anniversary of the central Asian former Soviet republic's independence. The country, ruled by strongman President Emomali Rakhmon since 1992, typically declares sweeping amnesties every five years to mark key anniversaries, including Independence Day on September 9.

Details of the Amnesty

The latest amnesty was published Wednesday in the official paper of the Tajik parliament, one day after the president signed the legislation into law. In total, the amnesty will affect 18,038 convicts: 11,305 individuals will be released, and the remaining 6,733 will have their sentences reduced. All actions are to be completed within two months.
