UK Arrests Eight in Global Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault Probe

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) announced on Thursday that eight individuals have been arrested in connection with an international network of men who drug and sexually abuse women they know. The investigation, triggered by a tip-off from German journalists in 2025, uncovered a global platform used to facilitate these crimes.

Investigation Uncovers Global Network

NCA deputy director Nigel Leary revealed that the agency found “a truly international network with group members identified in dozens of countries spanning every continent.” The probe into the unnamed online platform has led to 14 separate ongoing investigations in the UK and abroad. Authorities have identified over 270 individuals linked to the forum and its offshoots.

Scale and Nature of Offenses

The alleged offenses bear similarities to the high-profile case of Gisele Pelicot, who was drugged and raped by her then-husband and strangers for nearly a decade. Since the 2025 trial and conviction of Dominique Pelicot, similar cases have emerged across Europe, from Germany to the Netherlands. “Drug-facilitated sexual assault is no longer isolated behavior, but increasingly organized,” Leary stated, emphasizing that digital platforms are enabling this crime.

Under-Reporting and Evolving Threat

Leary noted that such crimes are often “under-detected and under-reported” because victims may not remember the abuse due to sedation. Helen Millichap, director of the National Center for Violence Against Women and Girls and Public Protection, described it as a “serious and evolving threat, rooted in domestic abuse,” adding that the online and connected nature of the abuse means the “dimensions are changing.”

Ongoing Cases and International Cooperation

Multiple investigations into organized drugging and sexual offenses are underway in the UK. In Stockport, Manchester, the husband of a woman allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted is set to stand trial in September alongside 12 other men accused of participating in the abuse. Last week, investigators from Brazil, Canada, France, Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain, the United States, and Europol met in London to share information on possible cases.

Europol's Project Medusa

As part of a separate operation, Europol's Project Medusa has identified 156 victims and perpetrators of drug-facilitated sexual assaults (DFSA) across participating countries. “The operation focused on DFSA primarily in intimate-partner settings, particularly in the context of misogynist online communities,” Europol stated. The global operation has discovered four new “misogynist online communities” facilitating such crimes.
