Democracy Demands Change and Humility in Elections
Democracy Demands Change and Humility in Elections

In a democracy, the political lifespan of individual politicians is inherently limited. This principle underpins the imposition of term limits for constitutional offices. Democracies thrive on change; without it, they risk devolving into the fiefdom of a privileged few. The conduct of an election campaign profoundly influences its outcome. Past performance matters, and politicians must persuade voters through their behavior and policies. Humility is crucial during a campaign to win hearts and minds. Yet, what was observed was a politician blaming the public for his own political misfortunes.

Gilgit-Baltistan Election Outcome

Traditionally, the electoral mandate in Gilgit-Baltistan has favored candidates backed by the ruling party in Islamabad. However, in the recent elections, candidates affiliated with the PML-N failed to secure that advantage. Instead, the PPP and independent candidates won the largest number of seats. This shift should be a matter of concern for the PML-N, prompting serious introspection.

Lessons for Democracy

Pakistan was not founded to become a fiefdom controlled by a select few from a single family. Hereditary rule has no place in a democracy or even a quasi-democratic system. Arrogance ultimately becomes a liability for politicians. It is hoped that valuable lessons have been learned. Sanity must prevail during the election campaign for the upcoming AJK elections. Overexposure through state-funded advertisements invariably leads to public backlash.

In a separate development, Malik Tariq Ali called for a stronger Pak-Iran economic partnership. The Punjab government has issued an advisory to protect crops during monsoon rains.
