Student Bodies Submit Consensus Recommendations
Consultations on the restoration of student unions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s universities have entered their final phase, with major student organisations submitting their consensus recommendations to the provincial government. The development came during a meeting chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Higher Education and Local Government, Mina Khan Afridi, which was attended by representatives of various student bodies and other stakeholders. Representatives of Islami Jamiat-i-Talaba, Insaf Students Federation, Jamiat Talaba-i-Islam, Pakhtunkhwa Students Organisation and Peoples Students Federation, among others, presented their proposals for the revival of student unions.
Minister Afridi Highlights Democratic Values
Speaking on the occasion, Mina Khan Afridi said the provincial government was committed to restoring student unions through a broad-based consultative process and had reached the final stage of deliberations. He directed the Higher Education Department to finalise the draft policy within the next 10 days in light of the recommendations submitted by stakeholders. “The restoration of student unions will strengthen democratic values and provide a platform for the emergence of future leadership,” the minister said, adding that educational institutions had historically served as nurseries of political and social leadership.
Balanced Framework for Healthy Activities
Afridi said the government aimed to introduce a balanced and workable framework that would encourage healthy and constructive student activities while ensuring a conducive academic environment in universities across the province. The meeting concluded with a consensus to expedite the process so that the final policy on the restoration of student unions could be presented for approval at the earliest opportunity.
