The initial investigation report into the tragic roof collapse of a tuition center in Lahore's Kahna area has been submitted to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The report attributes the disaster to excessive soil and debris piled on an already weak roof structure.
Cause of Collapse
According to the report, the roof gave way under the weight of a large quantity of soil and debris placed on top. Experts consulted during the investigation stated that pouring soil on the weak roof of the TR girder while children were present was a highly irresponsible act. The weak structure could not bear the additional load, leading to the collapse.
Casualties and Injuries
At the time of the accident, a female teacher and approximately 20 children were inside the tuition center. The incident resulted in 14 child fatalities and 6 injuries. Most deaths were caused by severe head injuries.
Arrests and Legal Action
The report indicates that no negligence by government officials has been proven so far. However, five individuals, including the house owner and his brother, have been taken into custody. A case has been registered, and investigations are ongoing.
Government Response
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered a close review of the report and signaled tighter safety standard operating procedures (SOPs) for tuition centers across the province.
