Govt Alleges Attempts to Disrupt Fair Polls in AJK

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has alleged that efforts are being made to undermine free and fair elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside veteran Kashmiri politician Sardar Ateeq Ahmad Khan, he stated that the AJK Legislative Assembly had completed its constitutional term and emphasized that the electoral process should proceed in a transparent manner.

Government Accusations

The minister claimed that despite the government's efforts, certain elements were attempting to create hurdles in the conduct of fair elections. He noted that most demands raised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had already been accepted and implemented through dialogue. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formed a high-level committee to engage with the Kashmir Action Committee, and agreements reached with the group had largely been carried out.

Implemented Measures

According to the minister, key measures implemented include subsidized electricity at Rs3 per unit in AJK, relief on flour and essential commodities, and improvements in internet services. He further said that renewed protest calls by the Joint Action Committee were complicating the situation and questioned whether such actions were intended to damage Pakistan's relationship with Azad Kashmir or the broader Kashmir cause.

Legal and Political Context

Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also referred to the demand regarding the abolition of refugee seats in the AJK Assembly, noting that courts had already ruled that these constitutional seats cannot be removed without proper legislation. Meanwhile, Sardar Ateeq Ahmad Khan urged the Joint Action Committee to avoid rigid positions, stating that the government had shown seriousness in addressing public concerns through negotiations and implementation of agreed measures.

These developments come as the political situation in AJK remains delicate, with both the government and opposition groups navigating the path toward elections. The government maintains its commitment to transparent polls, while allegations of interference continue to surface.
