KMC Launches Citywide Drain Cleaning Drive Ahead of Monsoon

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is set to initiate a comprehensive cleaning drive for all major storm-water drains across the city to ensure smooth rainwater flow and minimize urban flooding risks. This decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, to review ongoing development projects and municipal services. The meeting focused on monsoon preparedness, civic infrastructure, and measures to improve drainage systems throughout Karachi.

Procurement and Budget Allocation

During the briefing, Municipal Commissioner KMC, Abrar Jaffar, informed the Mayor that tenders for desilting and cleaning major drains have been floated, with bid opening scheduled for Monday. Work will commence immediately after procurement to ensure all major drains are cleaned before monsoon rains. KMC has allocated Rs. 600 million for the citywide drain cleaning operation, demonstrating the organization's commitment to protecting citizens and public infrastructure during the rainy season.

Transparency and Oversight

Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab directed that a third-party consultant be engaged to independently monitor the cleaning process, ensuring transparency, quality control, and timely completion. He emphasized strict oversight to guarantee effective utilization of public funds and adherence to highest standards.
