The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the earthquake's magnitude and pinpointed its epicenter in India, approximately 37 kilometers from Kyelang. The tremors were distinctly felt in Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and numerous other cities throughout Punjab, prompting residents to evacuate their homes and gather in open spaces as a precautionary measure.
Immediate Response and Assessment
A spokesperson for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that no loss of life or property damage had been recorded in Punjab. The spokesperson elaborated that while tremors were experienced in Lahore and other districts, the epicenter was located in the Kashmir region, with the earthquake's depth recorded at 18 kilometers. Authorities remained vigilant and continued to monitor the situation closely.
Impact Across the Border
Reports from across the border indicated that strong tremors were also felt in Indian cities, including Chandigarh, Indian-occupied Kashmir, and several other urban centers. Tremors were reported in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Noida, Ludhiana, Poonch, Srinagar, Udhampur, and Dehradun, among other areas. Residents of high-rise buildings in Chandigarh's sectors and adjoining areas of Mohali experienced shaking that lasted several seconds, causing light fixtures to sway and household items to rattle. Many people rushed out of buildings in panic.
No Casualties Reported
Fortunately, no casualties or structural damage were reported from Chandigarh, Mohali, or Panchkula. Emergency services were placed on high alert, and authorities kept a close watch on the evolving situation to ensure public safety.
