Al-Ahli Saudi Club have successfully defended their AFC Champions League Elite title, defeating Japan's Machida Zelvia 1-0 in a hard-fought final at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on April 25, 2026. The victory marks the club's second consecutive continental crown, making them the first team since rivals Al-Ittihad in 2006 to win back-to-back titles in Asia's premier club competition.
A Test of Character
The match was far from straightforward for the Saudi side. Machida Zelvia, employing a disciplined 5-2-3 formation and aggressive pressing, matched Al-Ahli's intensity throughout regulation time. Despite dominating possession, Al-Ahli struggled to break down a resolute Japanese defense. Goalkeeper Kosei Tani made a crucial save in the 12th minute to deny Galeno, and Merih Demiral hit the crossbar just before halftime.
In the second half, Machida limited Al-Ahli to only two attempts and threatened through Hiroyuki Mae's long-range effort. The situation worsened for the defending champions in the 68th minute when defender Zakaria Hawsawi was shown a red card for headbutting Australian striker Tete Yengi after a confrontation.
Extra-Time Heroics
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Al-Ahli held firm and pushed the match into extra time. The decisive moment came in the 96th minute when Riyad Mahrez delivered a cross to the far post, finding Franck Kessie. The Ivorian laid the ball off for substitute Feras Al-Brikan, who fired home the winner.
Kessie once again proved instrumental, having also created the equalizer after a red card in the quarter-final against Johor Darul Ta'zim. In the dying moments, Machida nearly equalized when Edouard Mendy failed to hold a cross, but Demiral cleared the danger to secure the triumph.
Remarkable Turnaround
Al-Ahli's victory caps an extraordinary journey. Just four years after suffering relegation from the Saudi Pro League, the club has now established itself among Asia's elite under German coach Matthias Jaissle. Jaissle, who was on the verge of being sacked 18 months ago, has now led the team to back-to-back continental titles.
The final was played in front of 58,984 fans, a testament to the unwavering support that helped the club rise from adversity. Al-Ahli become the first team to win the tournament consecutively since Al-Ittihad in 2006, cementing Jeddah's status as the only city in the modern era to produce successive Asian champions.
