Kimi Antonelli returned to winning ways on Saturday by denying Lewis Hamilton a crowd-pleasing home victory in the sprint race ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The Italian driver, driving for Mercedes, overtook Hamilton on lap eight of 17 with the help of electrical power to secure his first win since Monaco last month.
Race Details
Hamilton started on pole position and held off Antonelli until the halfway point. After taking the lead, Antonelli exclaimed over the team radio: “Let’s go! Let’s go!” Lando Norris finished third in McLaren’s white-and-green throwback livery following a thrilling battle with George Russell and Max Verstappen early in the race.
Impact on Championship
Antonelli’s victory extended his Formula 1 standings lead to 43 points over teammate George Russell, who finished fourth after starting fifth. Russell had been complaining of a “strange” lack of pace in qualifying the day before, a setback after his win at the Austrian Grand Prix last week had boosted his title chances.
Upcoming Qualifying
Qualifying for the British Grand Prix is scheduled later on Saturday, with the main race set for Sunday. The sprint result sets up an intriguing battle for the main event, with Hamilton eager to please his home crowd and Antonelli aiming to extend his championship lead.
