Bosnia-Herzegovina secured a historic 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match on Wednesday, advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The match, played in Seattle, saw Bosnia finish with four points, and hours later FIFA confirmed they would be among the best eight third-placed teams to progress to the last 32.
Match Highlights
Goals from Bosnia's youngest ever World Cup player, 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, and an own goal by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada put the European side in control. Qatar pulled one back through 35-year-old Hassan Al-Haydos late in the first half, but Ermin Mahmic sealed the win with his second consecutive goal in the 80th minute.
Early Dominance
Bosnia started strongly, testing Abunada twice in the first four minutes. He denied Ermedin Demirovic's fierce drive and tipped away Ivan Sunjic's shot. The breakthrough came from Alajbegovic, who scored a screamer from outside the area after beating two players. He celebrated by putting a finger to his lips.
Dzeko's Influence
Edin Dzeko, winning his 150th cap, played a key role in the second goal five minutes later. His shot took a wicked deflection off Al-Brake and then Abunada on its way into the net. Dzeko also hit the post shortly after.
Qatar's Response
Qatar's most capped player, Al-Haydos, pulled one back in the 42nd minute. He later left the pitch injured in the 55th minute, ending his World Cup and possibly his international career. Pedro Miguel hit the post for Qatar in stoppage time of the first half.
Second Half and Decisive Goal
Chances were scarce until Esmir Bajraktarevic forced a save from Abunada. Mahmic then prodded the ball home in the 80th minute, ripping off his shirt in celebration and earning a booking. Qatar exit the group stage for the second consecutive World Cup, but with one point compared to none in 2022.
