Broos admits Canada overpowered South Africa in World Cup exit
Broos: Canada's speed and power beat South Africa

Canada's pace and power too much for South Africa

TORONTO - South Africa head coach Hugo Broos admitted his side was outmatched by Canada's superior pace and physicality after a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat ended their historic FIFA World Cup campaign in the Round of 32. Stephen Eustaquio's stunning 92nd-minute strike in Los Angeles shattered South Africa's hopes of reaching the last 16, with Broos acknowledging that the co-hosts deserved their victory.

“We have to be honest. We lost because we lacked power and speed,” the 74-year-old Belgian said after the match. “Canada won many of the duels and played with much greater speed, both in running and decision-making. Modern football is about power and speed, and that's where they were better.”

Domestic league shortcomings highlighted

Broos reiterated his long-standing concerns about South African football, saying the country's domestic competition does not adequately prepare players for the demands of the modern international game. The coach also expressed immense pride in his players after they reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.

“Everyone hoped we could get this far, but very few expected it,” Broos said. “We wanted to go further, but what this team achieved deserves recognition. I'm extremely proud of them.”

End of an era for Broos

The defeat also marked Broos' final FIFA World Cup appearance, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career spanning more than five decades as both a player and coach. Although he stopped short of announcing his retirement from coaching, he confirmed this would be his last World Cup.

Since taking charge in 2021, Broos transformed South Africa into a disciplined and competitive side, guiding them back to the World Cup for the first time since 2010 and leading the largely domestic-based squad to its most successful campaign on football's biggest stage.
