Mike Hesson Aims to Build Multiple Leaders in Pakistan Cricket Team
Hesson Plans Multiple Leaders for Pakistan Team

Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has outlined an ambitious vision to reshape the national team’s leadership culture by developing multiple leaders rather than relying solely on the captain, saying the approach will create a stronger and more resilient side.

Hesson Criticizes Captain-Centric Structure

Speaking in an interview with a local sports platform, Hesson said Pakistan’s traditional captain-centric structure often sidelines former captains, preventing experienced players from continuing to influence decision-making after relinquishing the role. “We’re trying to build multiple leaders within the team,” Hesson said, adding that senior players should remain active contributors both on and off the field regardless of who wears the captain’s armband.

Collaborative Environment Being Implemented

The former New Zealand coach revealed that Pakistan has already begun implementing the model, with captains encouraged to consult experienced teammates during matches and throughout preparations, fostering a collaborative environment instead of concentrating responsibility on one individual.

Endorsement of PCB’s Central Contract System

Hesson also endorsed the Pakistan Cricket Board’s revamped central contract system, describing it as a progressive framework that better reflects the demands of modern cricket while preserving the importance of Test matches. He argued that players should be assessed according to their roles and contributions across different formats rather than under a uniform payment structure.

Test Cricket Remains Pinnacle

Calling Test cricket the pinnacle of the sport, Hesson acknowledged the financial realities of today’s game but insisted that innovative contract models are essential to maintaining the prestige of the longest format while rewarding players fairly for their specialist skills.
