Khuzaima Tanveer: ILT20 Prepared Me for International Stage

UAE and Desert Vipers fast bowler Khuzaima Tanveer has credited the DP World ILT20 for playing a pivotal role in his cricketing development, providing exposure to some of the biggest names in world cricket. The 26-year-old right-arm pacer, who made his UAE debut in April 2026 after a breakthrough in franchise cricket, reflected on how the league helped him transition from an emerging talent to an international player.

Milestones and International Debut

Tanveer described representing the UAE as a proud moment, fulfilling a dream shared by many young cricketers. Obtaining his UAE passport and subsequently playing for the national team were special milestones for him and his family. He stated, “The DP World ILT20 helped prepare me for that level because you’re constantly competing against high-quality players. It gives you confidence that you belong on the international stage.”

Impressive Performance in ILT20

Tanveer first made headlines during Season 3 of the DP World ILT20 with match figures of 4 for 22 against the Sharjah Warriorz. Over two seasons with the Desert Vipers, he has taken 24 wickets in 18 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most consistent UAE bowlers in the competition. In the title-winning Season 4 campaign, he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker among UAE players with 17 wickets, and third overall. He was also in contention for the Blue Belt award for the best UAE player, eventually won by MI Emirates’ Muhammad Waseem.

Learning from Legends

Tanveer emphasized the value of sharing a dressing room with world-class players. He noted that learning extends beyond matches to training sessions, team meetings, and conversations. He said, “I was fortunate to have the likes of Sam Curran, Naseem Shah, and Lockie Ferguson in our team. Even small pieces of advice from such players add up over time and help you become a better cricketer.”

Comparisons with Waqar Younis

Tanveer’s bowling action has often drawn comparisons with Pakistan legend Waqar Younis, but he downplays such parallels. He remarked, “I don’t think anyone can compare themselves to someone like Waqar Younis. He’s a legend of the game and someone every fast bowler looks up to. If people see similarities, I take it as a compliment, but my focus is on becoming the best version of myself.” He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to interact with icons like Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram through the ILT20.

Aiming Higher with UAE and ILT20

Now in contention for a regular spot in the UAE squad, Tanveer is determined to raise his standards. He said, “Once you represent the UAE, you carry extra responsibility. People expect more from you and you expect more from yourself. My aim is to keep improving, perform consistently, and contribute whenever I get the opportunity.” He pointed to UAE captain Muhammad Waseem as an example for local players, noting his consistent performances against top-tier competition.

Looking Ahead to Season 5

As the DP World ILT20 approaches Season 5, Tanveer is eager to embrace new challenges and opportunities. He concluded, “Every season brings new challenges and new opportunities to learn. The standard of the competition is very high and as a player that’s exactly what you want. My goal is to keep improving, contribute to my team, and continue making the most of the opportunities that the DP World ILT20 provides.”
