NEW JERSEY - Kylian Mbappe scored twice and became France's all-time leading goalscorer as the defending champions opened their World Cup campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Senegal in Group I.
The French captain surpassed Olivier Giroud's record by taking his international tally to 58 goals, while also moving to 14 World Cup goals—level with German legend Gerd Muller and just two behind all-time tournament record-holder Miroslav Klose.
Despite the final scoreline, France faced a stern challenge from a spirited Senegal side that created the better chances in the first half. Nicolas Jackson struck the post, while Ismaila Sarr squandered a golden opportunity as the African champions threatened to take control of the match.
France improved significantly after the break and finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute. Michael Olise split the Senegal defence with a precise pass, allowing Mbappe to race through and calmly beat goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The momentum shifted firmly in France's favour, and substitute Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd minute after finishing a fine move initiated by Adrien Rabiot.
Senegal briefly revived hopes in stoppage time when Ibrahim Mbaye produced a superb solo effort and blasted the ball into the top corner. However, Mbappe had the final say moments later, unleashing a spectacular long-range strike that sealed the victory in style.
"I want to leave a mark on my country's history and help France win the World Cup," Mbappe said after the match.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Lahore police have unveiled a comprehensive security plan for 458 processions during the Muharram period. The plan includes deployment of additional personnel, CCTV monitoring, and strict traffic management to ensure the safety of participants.
