Norris Tops Second Practice by 0.009s Over Russell

BARCELONA: Lando Norris narrowly outpaced fellow Briton George Russell by 0.009 seconds to lead second practice at the Barcelona-Catalunya Formula One Grand Prix on Friday.

McLaren Dominates Top Three

The reigning world champion, who sat out the opening session, and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri sandwiched the Mercedes driver for the top three positions. Piastri finished 0.057 seconds behind Norris's leading time.

Italian teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli, who leads the championship after five consecutive wins in the other Mercedes, placed fifth, more than half a second off the pace. Charles Leclerc was fourth in his upgraded Ferrari.

Norris, who failed to finish the previous two Grands Prix in Canada and Monaco, claimed top spot with a blistering lap of 1:15.426. This performance signals an intense battle between McLaren and Mercedes throughout the weekend.

Norris Reflects on Performance

"I think it was a reasonable Friday. There is still a good amount of things to improve," said Norris. "It wasn't like I felt amazing or happy, but it's hot so I don't think anyone will be that happy out there. It's difficult with the wind and the conditions."

Norris expressed satisfaction with the car's improvement after recent struggles. "We are up there with the people we want to be. We are just happy we are heading in the right direction from the last couple of weeks," he added.

Russell Sharp in Practice

Piastri, who finished second in the opening practice and won in Barcelona last year, set an early benchmark of 1:15.724, already ahead of the best morning time as McLaren demonstrated their strength. Russell, fastest in the first session on a hot, sunny day with track temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius, was soon close behind, just two-tenths of a second adrift.

The 28-year-old is competing in his 100th Grand Prix for Mercedes, and two strong practice sessions are encouraging after his troubled start to the season.

Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson pulled up in the pit exit lane after losing power due to a suspected gearbox issue, prompting a virtual safety car deployment. Several teams used that time to switch to soft tyres, including Mercedes. Midway through the session, Russell surged into the lead by 0.289 seconds, with Antonelli half a second behind. However, Norris ultimately proved quickest, suggesting Antonelli and Russell face a tough challenge at Montmelo.

Driver Feedback and Tyre Concerns

"Brake pedal feels horrible," Antonelli reported to his team, while his front left tyre was also heavily worn. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, ninth quickest, also noted significant tyre degradation, which could be a major factor in the heat this weekend.

"The tyres are overheating quite a lot. We're just trying to find the best balance," said Antonelli. "I think overall there's still quite a bit of work to do, but I'm quite confident ahead of tomorrow."

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen finished sixth. Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad and Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto were seventh and eighth, respectively. Isack Hadjar was tenth and expressed displeasure with Sergio Perez, who forced him onto the grass to avoid contact, resulting in a warning for the Mexican.

In the opening session, several regular drivers gave up their seats for rookies, with Leo Fornaroli and Paul Aron impressing. Alpine's Pierre Gasly was buoyed by the reinstatement of his third-place finish in Monaco but struggled to 17th on the timesheet in the morning, improving only to 16th later.

Home favorite and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who indicated this might be his final race in Barcelona, finished 21st in his Aston Martin in the afternoon session.
