Cristiano Ronaldo delivered another historic performance on football's biggest stage, scoring twice as Portugal dismantled Uzbekistan 5-0 in a one-sided Group K encounter at the FIFA World Cup in Houston on Tuesday. The Portuguese captain etched his name deeper into football history by becoming the first player ever to score in six different World Cup tournaments. The brace also elevated his World Cup tally to 10 goals, surpassing Portugal legend Eusebio to become his country's highest scorer in World Cup finals history.
Portugal's Dominant Start
Portugal wasted little time asserting their authority. Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute, expertly converting a low cross from Joao Cancelo at the near post. The 41-year-old forward struck again before halftime, calmly finishing a perfectly weighted pass from Bruno Fernandes to put his side firmly in control. Between Ronaldo's goals, Nuno Mendes curled home a superb free-kick as Portugal's attacking quality overwhelmed the Uzbek defence.
VAR Denies Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had pulled a goal back through Azizjon Ganiev, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review. Portugal continued to dominate after the break. An unfortunate own goal by Uzbekistan further extended the lead before Rafael Leao completed the rout with a clinical finish late in the match.
Ronaldo Ends Drought
Ronaldo, who had endured a 10-match scoring drought at major international tournaments, looked rejuvenated throughout and came close to completing a hat-trick on several occasions. His movement, finishing and leadership proved decisive as Portugal secured their first victory of the tournament in emphatic fashion.
Convincing Performance
Backed by a crowd of 68,777 spectators, Roberto Martinez's side produced one of the most convincing performances of the competition, with Ronaldo once again proving that age remains no barrier to greatness.
