The Saudi Athletics Federation has officially announced the launch of the inaugural Saudi Athletics Grand Prix – Riyadh 2026, scheduled for May 15–16 at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Stadium. The event will commence with a World Athletics Continental Tour meeting at the Bronze level, followed by an International Challenge Meeting.
Global Participation and Event Scope
Between 200 and 300 athletes from over 50 countries are expected to participate, competing across 31 track and field events for both men and women. This diverse participation underscores the international appeal of the event and the growing stature of Saudi Arabia in the world of athletics.
Alignment with Vision 2030
The Grand Prix reflects the strong support extended to the sports sector in Saudi Arabia and aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030. It reinforces the Kingdom’s position as a global sports destination and marks a significant milestone, coinciding with the 63rd anniversary of Saudi athletics.
Path to Saudi Elite Athletics League
Furthermore, the Grand Prix represents a key step toward the launch of the Saudi Elite Athletics League, planned for 2027. This initiative aims to elevate the standard of athletics in the region and provide a platform for emerging talent.
The Federation’s Managing Director, Majed Basonbul, emphasized that the Grand Prix highlights the Kingdom’s growing presence on the international stage and strengthens its position as a key player in the sport of athletics. The event promises to be a landmark occasion for Saudi sports and the global athletics community.
