World number one Jannik Sinner delivered a commanding performance in his opening match at the French Open on Tuesday, defeating French wildcard Clement Tabur 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round. The 24-year-old Italian needed just over two hours to dispatch his opponent on Court Philippe-Chatrier, extending his remarkable winning streak to 30 matches.
Dominant Display on Center Court
Sinner, who has won all three clay-court Masters 1000 events leading up to Roland Garros, showed no signs of slowing down. He raced through the first set in 30 minutes, losing only one game, and maintained his relentless pace throughout the match. The world number 171 Tabur fought valiantly, earning applause from the home crowd, but Sinner's powerful groundstrokes proved too much to handle.
In the third set, Sinner faced a brief challenge in his first service game but quickly broke Tabur to close in on victory. After missing three match points, including an uncharacteristic sloppy volley, he finally sealed the win on his own serve.
Career Grand Slam in Sight
With double-reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz absent from the draw, Sinner is widely regarded as the favorite to lift the Coupe des Mousquetaires for the first time on June 7. Reflecting on his performance, Sinner said, "I'm very happy to be back here, it's a very special place. First-round matches are never easy, but it's even more special to start the tournament in a night session."
Sinner's last appearance on Court Philippe-Chatrier was in last year's French Open final, where he lost a five-set thriller despite holding three championship points. However, he showed no lingering effects from that defeat, displaying focus and determination throughout the match.
Next Opponent
Sinner will face Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round, as he continues his quest to complete a career Grand Slam.
