Thun Parts with Key Player Amid Coach Departure
Surprise Swiss champion Thun has sold their top prospect, midfielder Ethan Meichtry, to Italian Serie A club Genoa just days before the team begins their Champions League qualifying campaign. The move comes on the heels of coach Mauro Lustrinelli's departure to Bundesliga side Union Berlin.
Genoa announced on Wednesday that they have signed the Switzerland Under-21 international to a multi-year contract. Neither club disclosed the transfer fee, but it was reportedly an initial 4 million euros ($4.6 million). Thun issued a statement confirming the deal, describing it as a validation of their philosophy to develop young talent.
Meichtry's Rise and Impact on Thun's Title Run
Ethan Meichtry, who turns 21 next week, scored eight goals in the Swiss league last season, playing a pivotal role in newly promoted Thun's stunning march to their first league title in the club's 128-year history. His performances earned him a call-up to the Swiss Under-21 national team.
Thun's unexpected championship success has already seen coach Mauro Lustrinelli leave for Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. He has been replaced by Gian-Luca Privitelli, who previously coached Meichtry at the Swiss Under-20 level.
Champions League Qualifiers Loom
Thun will begin their Champions League journey in the second qualifying round against Dinamo Zagreb. The first leg is scheduled for July 21 or 22 at home, with the return leg in Croatia one week later. The team faces the challenge of competing in Europe's elite club competition without their coach and star midfielder.
Unheralded teams that qualify for the Champions League often struggle to retain key personnel. French league runner-up Lens saw coach Pierre Sage leave for Conference League winner Crystal Palace. Scotland's Heart of Midlothian lost the title on the final day at Celtic and subsequently saw coach Derek McInnes and captain Lawrence Shankland both join Rangers.
