FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final in New Jersey on July 19 and present the trophy to the winners. The announcement was made during an interview with Fox and Friends.
Joint Trophy Presentation
Infantino stated, "We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together." This decision follows a controversy at the Club World Cup last year when Trump handed the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James but remained on stage, joining the team's celebrations.
Close Relationship
Infantino has cultivated a close relationship with Trump, awarding him a newly created FIFA peace prize at the World Cup draw in Washington last year. The joint presentation aims to avoid a repeat of the awkward moment at the Club World Cup.
