Wolves Sack Manager Rob Edwards After Relegation

LONDON: Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted ways with manager Rob Edwards, the club announced on Thursday, just seven months after his appointment following their relegation from the Premier League.

Edwards' Brief Tenure

Edwards was brought in from Middlesbrough in November to replace the dismissed Vitor Pereira. However, he could not prevent Wolves from dropping into the Championship after an eight-year stay in the top flight. The team finished at the bottom of the Premier League table, managing only three wins in 38 matches.

During his tenure, Edwards oversaw just five victories and suffered 16 losses in 30 games across all competitions. At the time of his departure from Middlesbrough, they were second in the Championship.

Club's Decision

Following an end-of-season review, the club concluded that a change in management would enhance their prospects of an immediate return to the Premier League. Wolves executive chairman Nathan Shi expressed the difficulty of the decision but emphasized the need for a new direction.

"This has been an extremely difficult decision," Shi said. "Our decision was not about character, professionalism or dedication. It was about determining what we believe gives Wolves the strongest opportunity to move forward from a sporting perspective."

He added: "While there were positive signs and areas of progress, we ultimately concluded that a different football direction would better align with the style, identity and level of competitiveness we want to establish at the club. It would have been easier to continue with what was familiar. However, leadership is not about choosing the easiest path, but about making the difficult decisions we believe are right for the future of the football club which will put Wolves on the strongest platform to move forward."

Potential Successor

Cesar Peixoto, who guided Gil Vicente to a sixth-place finish in Portugal's top flight last season, is reportedly the leading candidate to take over at Molineux.

Recent Transfers

Wolves have been active in the transfer market since the season ended, securing Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez on free transfers. Additionally, key midfielder Andre has agreed to a new contract with the club.
