With WWDC and its AI-powered features now behind us, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has shared fresh details on upcoming Apple hardware, including camera-equipped AirPods and a second-generation foldable iPhone.
AirPods with Cameras for AI Context
Gurman confirms that the previously rumored AirPods with integrated cameras are on track for a late 2027 launch. While users test beta versions of iOS 27 this fall, Apple is internally testing these earbuds with iOS 28. The AirPods will feature cameras in their stems and indicator lights to signal when data is uploaded to the cloud. This setup could provide Siri with visual context about the user's surroundings, serving as a precursor to Apple's eventual smart glasses.
Second-Generation Folding iPhone
Gurman also reports on a second foldable iPhone following the model expected this fall. This signals Apple's commitment to the foldable category, with hopes of better utilizing the dual-screen format than current competitors. He notes that while the Pixel 10 Pro Fold offers a large screen, it suffers from app compatibility issues and a smaller battery compared to the standard Pixel 10, along with a high price.
20th Anniversary iPhone and Chip Roadmap
The long-rumored 20th anniversary iPhone, codenamed V73 and V74, is expected to follow the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It will feature a nearly edge-to-edge display with curved glass wrapping around the sides, similar in size to the Pro models. The standard iPhone 18 may not launch until next year, powered by an A20 series chip. The 2027 models are anticipated to use a 2nm A21 chip, with the A22 Pro moving to 1.4nm technology. Apple is reportedly considering Intel as an additional production partner alongside TSMC.
These plans align with previous rumors of a slim iPhone Air. However, with John Ternus as CEO, a looming RAM and component shortage, and AI integration across the board, even solid plans may evolve.
